U.S. Marshal convicted of abusing prisoner while in custody in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — A member of the U.S. Marshals Service has been found guilty of abusing a prisoner in Lafayette in 2024, authorities said.

Deputy United States Marshal Joshua Firmin was convicted in federal court Wednesday of subjecting a prisoner to cruel and unusual punishment and obstruction of justice, according to Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

“When the defendant beat the victim without any lawful purpose or justification, he violated the Constitution and breached the public’s trust,” Dhillon said. “The jury’s verdict sends a clear message that all Americans — including prisoners — are entitled to basic human dignity.”…
