Tight budgets force Lansing School District layoffs as federal relief money runs dry across Michigan

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The Lansing School District laid off 50 staff members this week as federal pandemic funding expires, creating budget challenges for public schools across Michigan.

In a letter to district staff Monday, Interim Superintendent Jessica Benavides said the layoffs were a “difficult decision” brought on by the expiration of the federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund.
