MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis-Shelby County Schools leaders said fewer students are being suspended and more are staying in the classroom, pointing to districtwide improvements in student discipline during a presentation to the school board Tuesday.
District officials reported office disciplinary referrals dropped from nearly 62,000 to about 37,500 during the past school year. They also said the district’s overall suspension rate declined from 13% to just over 11%, surpassing the district’s performance target.
