Spicy billboard placement sparks a Twin Cities hot chicken rivalry

RICHFIELD, Minn. — Hot chicken has become a hot commodity in the Twin Cities in recent years, and nowhere is that more obvious than on a busy corner at the intersection of 44th Street and Penn Avenue in Richfield.

A few weeks ago, Nashville Coop, the local chain that helped usher in the hot chicken craze in the Twin Cities in the past several years, suddenly found itself overshadowed outside its own restaurant when a new billboard for national chain, Dave’s Hot Chicken, suddenly appeared above the building next door.

“I was like, ‘Wow,'” said Scott Olson, who has managed Nashville Coop’s Richfield location since it opened in 2024. “I thought, that’s… that’s kind of bold.”…
