The Birmingham-based healthcare provider that won an emergency contract to provide services in Alabama prisons has faced controversies over its services in other states.
NaphCare, which signed a $500 million contract with the Alabama Department of Corrections early last month, was banned from operating in New York earlier this year and has been blamed by the Arizona Department of Corrections for negligence that led to nine prisons in that state being placed in receivership.
“Across the country, they have had some issues,” said Rep. Chris England, D-Tuscaloosa, a member of the Joint Legislature Contract Review Committee, which could review the NaphCare contract as early as this week, in an interview on Thursday. “If you go look at New York, I think Ohio and Washington, they have had significant issues in providing care, to the point where a couple of states are trying to get rid of them.”…
