An Alabama hotel that was once frequented by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders in the Civil Rights Movement has been named one of the most endangered historic places in America.
The Ben Moore Hotel in Montgomery was recently one of 11 sites included on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s listing of America’s Most Endangered Historic Places, garnering a one-time grant of $25,000.
“The Ben Moore Hotel was a rich cultural landmark for Black Americans living in Montgomery, Alabama under Jim Crow, but prolonged vacancy has led to structural deterioration, and the historic Centennial Hill neighborhood is facing development pressures,” the National Trust website states. “The multi-story historic hotel needs a significant amount of funding, technical expertise, community engagement, and partnerships to fully restore, protect, and activate the site.”…
