Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers met with Horry County officials in Conway, Friday, May 15, to assess the flood risk at on the Waccamaw River.
The Waccamaw River Flood Risk Management Study is an effort to identify key areas of the river with a focus “on targeted improvements that restore natural water flow… And to find solutions that can make a real difference for residents, infrastructure, and emergency access throughout Horry County,” according to Lt. Col. Todd Mainwaring, Charleston District commander for the USACE.
The team reviewed areas where infrastructure currently restricts natural water flow. Restricted water flow, due to infrastructure, is a primary driver of flooding. The project study area encompassed all of Horry County within the Waccamaw Riverine system…
