Prosecutors with District Attorney Jason Williams’ office have filed a habitual offender bill that could send a convicted New Orleans shoplifter to prison for life for killing two teenage girls while trying to outrun law enforcement.
Joneaka Smooth, 32, pleaded guilty in May to two counts of manslaughter, attempted manslaughter and obstruction of justice tied to a 2024 crash that ended the lives of two 17-year-old girls. It marked Smooth’s fourth slate of felony convictions.
