Just one Dollar General remains in NOLA as sudden closures leave employees, customers blindsided

The air conditioning blasted inside Christy Moore’s car as she sat parked in a handicap spot outside the Dollar General in Fillmore’s Oak Park Shopping Center last month.

It was a sweltering New Orleans afternoon as Moore jumped out to help her mother, Edwina Coleman, carry several plastic yellow grocery bags.

Moore said her mom is among many older people who live in the neighborhood and head to Dollar General for toiletries, pet food and other basic groceries. Though they sometimes make the longer two-mile trip to Rouses or Walmart for fresh produce, Moore said Coleman can more easily navigate the smaller discount store on her own…
