New Orleans area officials urge residents to prepare for extreme weekend temperatures

New Orleans and Jefferson Parish officials are asking residents to take steps to prepare for extreme heat this weekend, as the National Weather Service predicts temperatures in the mid-to-upper 90s and a heat index of around 110 degrees.

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Saturday and an extreme heat watch for Sunday. Forecasters warn that when the heat index reaches over 110 degrees, risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke rise.

The parishes are encouraging residents, especially the elderly and people with infants and children, to take precautions to prevent health episodes. People should stay inside, drink water and monitor for heat-related illness symptoms, like shortness of breath and dizziness.
