Jurors deliver verdict in death of Metairie handyman killed while repairing mailbox

Jefferson Parish jurors deliberated for four hours Thursday before voting to convict the defendant charged with shooting and killing a handyman who was repairing a mailbox at a Kenner residence three years ago.

Maurice Holmes, 28, of Kenner, was found guilty of first-degree murder following a three-day trial, court records said.

Holmes and his co-defendant, Tahj Matthews, 26, were accused of in the death of 66-year-old Lawrence Herr, of Metairie. No trial date has been set for Matthews, who is also charged with first-degree murder.

Herr was gunned down on the morning of April 10, 2023, in front of a home on Georgetown Street in Kenner. He’d been hired to do repair work at the vacant residence, including installing a mailbox, a medicine cabinet and door handles, according to authorities…
