Tunnel boring is set to begin on the Hudson Tunnel Project, marking a major milestone in the effort to build a new rail connection between New Jersey and New York and expand capacity along one of the nation’s busiest rail corridors.
Officials gathered Monday to celebrate the start of the tunnel boring phase of the project, which will create the first new rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River in more than 100 years. The new tunnel is expected to serve more than 200,000 daily riders traveling between New Jersey and New York.
The Gateway Tunnel is decades in the making and will transform transportation in New York and the entire Northeast.
