HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for much of the Hampton Roads region Thursday afternoon.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Norfolk, northern Chesapeake, Portsmouth, northeastern Suffolk and northwestern Virginia Beach.
Surrounding areas in Hampton Roads, Western Tidewater and the northern part of Virginia’s Eastern Shore are under a severe thunderstorm watch.
Downpours could be seen in Portsmouth near the Downtown Tunnel and in other parts of the region, as the National Weather Service said that, as of 3:10 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Crittenden, or near Churchland, moving east at 20 mph.
The National Weather Service said there could be 60 mph wind gusts and penny-sized hail. It said to expect damage to trees and power lines…
