Firefighters surprise 10-year-old birthday girl who lost mom, brother in apartment explosion

DALLAS (KTVT) – Days after losing her mother and little brother in a Dallas apartment explosion, a 10-year-old girl got a birthday surprise from firefighters that she’ll never forget.

For her 10th birthday, Vanessa Perez got a surprise visit and hands-on lesson from Dallas Fire Rescue firefighters. They’re the men and woman who worked to save her mother, 38-year-old Marisol Perez, and her brother, 1-year-old Erik Jr., after an explosion at the family’s apartment building.

Vanessa survived the explosion, thanks to a good Samaritan who pulled her from the rubble. Sadly, her mother and brother did not.

“She misses her mom and brother, but we’re here to support her,” said Nora Carmona of Vanessa, her niece. “She’s very happy. The fire department was the biggest gift.”…
