Portland’s pizza scene is not exactly waiting around for another basic slice shop. This is a city where dough gets debated, toppings get judged, and a neighborhood restaurant has to offer more than melted cheese to earn a loyal crowd.
That is what makes Strange Bird’s move into a permanent Southeast Portland home feel bigger than a simple restaurant opening.
The pizzeria, which first built its name as a food cart and pop-up, has now opened near Ladd’s Addition with a style that owner Tyler Robb describes as “neo-Neapolitan.” The restaurant opened June 12 in a former pizza shop space, bringing its thin, chewy, crisp pies into a full brick-and-mortar setting.
For a small operation that once had to chase attention through pop-ups, this is a significant step. Strange Bird is no longer just a promising name on Portland’s food circuit. It now has a home, a dining room, a bigger menu, and a chance to become the kind of neighborhood place people casually recommend before realizing they are sending everyone there…
