Busy highway near Portland is among nation’s worst for holiday weekend crashes, study finds

Drivers headed out for a Memorial Day weekend excursion in Oregon should remain cautious on one route in particular.

A new study from transportation analytics company INRIX shows a troubling trend for Portland drivers over the holiday weekend: a clear uptick in crashes among drivers leaving the metropolitan area for the Oregon coast.

The INRIX study looked at 205,076 crash-related incident records nationwide between 2022 and 2025 over the four-day Memorial Day weekend (Friday-Monday). Comparing those numbers to typical crash rates showed clear increases in holiday weekend crashes along a few popular vacation routes…
