Woman sentenced for fire that heavily damaged Elephants Deli in Northwest Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. — A judge sentenced a woman Wednesday morning for starting a fire that caused millions in damage to Elephants Delicatessen in Northwest Portland in March. She said the fire was accidentally set as she looked for food and a warm place to stay the night.

Catherine Stough, 56, pleaded guilty to reckless burning and second-degree criminal mischief. A judge sentenced her to 180 days in jail — or six months — with credit for time already served.

Police released surveillance video showing Stough, who was homeless at the time, wrapped in a blanket outside the restaurant on Northwest 22nd Avenue. A day after the fire, Stough told investigators that she was the person who started it…
