‘Depresses and saddens me’: Vandal damages plaque belonging to Darcelle XV Showplace

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland drag venue known for breaking world records was the target of vandalism earlier this week.

A plaque recognizing Darcelle XV Showplace’s listing on the National Register of Historic Places was recently the subject of hate speech, according to Jeremey Corvus-Peck. The owner took to social media to share photos of the graffiti, which read “NOT APPROPRIATE FOR PUBLIC ADVERTISING,” “KEEP AWAY FROM KIDS, “THE GAYEST HOMO EVER (SO FAR…)” and more.

The National Park Service added the business to the register of historic places in 2020, recognizing its contributions to the LGBTQ+ community.

“It depresses and saddens me that in 2026, someone can still write about harming another person simply because of who they are and who they love,” Corvus-Peck wrote, in part, in a Facebook post. “I place a great deal of blame on the current administration. Their rhetoric has emboldened people to believe that if you are not a straight white male, you are somehow less worthy — a second- or even third-class human being.”…
