More than 400 Shoshone people were killed at the Bear River Massacre in Preston, Idaho, in 1863, one of the deadliest acts of violence against Native Americans in U.S. history.
On Saturday night, Portland philanthropist Jordan D. Schnitzer will recognize the ongoing effort to transform the site of the massacre into a place of environmental and cultural healing with the first annual $50,000 Schnitzer Prize of the West.
