On this episode of Tiempo, New York Department of State issued a warning against immigration scams. Scammers often take advantage of the complex immigration legal system to prey on unsuspecting immigrants on their path to citizenship and steal personal information and/or money.
These fraudulent acts are disproportionally targeted to immigrants, especially those with limited English proficiency. The Department’s Division of Consumer Protection and the Office for New Americans are offering tips to help immigrants recognize and avoid common immigration scams. Among the most common schemes are impersonators posing as immigration officials or agents, the department said.
