Community gathers to remember mother killed in Chesterfield

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Community members gathered on Saturday to remember the mother of a 3-month-old who was shot and killed earlier this month.

On Saturday, April 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Libby Hill, loved ones came together to hold a candlelight vigil to remember and celebrate 28-year-old Barbie Perez. She was shot and killed by her child’s father in Chesterfield County, leaving behind a 3-month-old daughter.

During the vigil, attendees were asked to wear Perez’s favorite color, pink, and to bring a candle if they were able. People shared heartfelt stories and memories of Perez.

On Monday, April 13, at around 6 p.m., Chesterfield Police responded to Shady Creek Road for reports of an assault with a deadly weapon. Police found Perez shot and pronounced her dead at the scene.

Javonte Blackston was later charged with second-degree murder. Investigators stated that it was a domestic dispute, and a close friend of Perez said he was the father of her daughter…
