South Main Mercado will expand its footprint as it enters its fourth year

Community Foundation grants $20k to support event

ROCKFORD — An annual street festival and outdoor market that celebrates the city’s Latino culture and heritage is coming back for a fourth year.

South Main Mercado will have a bigger footprint this year when the event kicks off at noon Sunday, June 7 near South Main and Morgan streets. This year it will stretch from Cedar Street near the Embassy Suites by Hilton Rockford Riverfront all the way to Loomis Street near the Colman Yards redevelopment project.

“This event has grown because people continue to show up for South Main Street,” said Cat Valdez Doyle, event chairperson. “Our vendors, volunteers and partners have built this together over the past four years. It is a celebration of culture, but it is also a real investment in the neighborhood and the people who are part of it.”…
