First Alert Forward: Finding creative solutions to affordable housing in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Following tonight’s segment on Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs, First Alert 4 reporter Nathan Vickers sat down with city officials to talk about the city’s recent removal of certain restrictions for converting carriage houses and other similar structures into residential space.

Alderwoman Shameem Clark Hubbard sponsored the legislation in the fall to streamline ADU creation in the city. Vickers spoke with her and Miriam Planner, an executive planner in the City of St. Louis.

Keller explains that ADUs are independent units on the same property as a primary residence—such as carriage houses or attached units with separate entrances. While previously possible in St. Louis, the process required lengthy variance appeals. The new legislation, signed by the mayor in September, removes barriers like lot size restrictions and simplifies the approval process…
