St. Louis jail deaths trigger investigation demands from NAACP

ST. LOUIS — The NAACP’s St. Louis City branch on Tuesday submitted a series of formal investigation requests to St. Louis Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore, along with other state and federal authorities, calling for a review of the City Justice Center’s deaths in custody, emergency medical care, and medical transfer process.

A total of 22 detainees have died at the city’s jail since 2020, including the death of 32-year-old Dametria McDile in January. Police said McDile was found unresponsive in her cell and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

NAACP officials requested a criminal investigation into the jail by Gore, a Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice, and a regulatory review by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Missouri’s State Survey Agency…
