Don’t ‘rescue’ baby rabbits and birds this spring, Missouri conservationists warn

MISSOURI, USA — Spring has brought warmer weather and increased daylight to the St. Louis region, meaning the babies of wild animals are plentiful.

Humans encountering these offspring, including baby rabbits and birds, often incorrectly believe they’ve been abandoned by their parents and attempt to “rescue” the animals. But this desire to help could actually harm, or even kill, the babies, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Officials said young wildlife are rarely abandoned by their parents, who are often out searching for food to feed their babies. That’s why conservationists have asked people to “leave wildlife wild” and not interfere with nature this spring…
