Judge rules St. Louis mayor has final, not exclusive authority to appoint sheriff

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – A judge ruled this week that Mayor Cara Spencer has the ultimate authority to appoint a replacement for former St. Louis City Sheriff Alfred Montgomery, but must include input from the Board of Aldermen and the Comptroller.

Montgomery has been in federal custody since October 2025 for allegations related to his time as sheriff. He was removed from office Dec. 23, 2025, following a quo warranto judgment after he was indicted on federal felonies.
