For the second time this summer, a San Antonio mariachi musician has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, rousing the mariachi community to mobilize politically and press for his release.
Reny Jesús Colina Torres, 27, a Venezuelan who freelances as a mariachi singer and trumpet player and works as a dishwasher at a Cracker Barrel, was arrested by ICE agents during a vehicle stop Monday in San Antonio, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.
In late June, his friend and fellow mariachi, Hebert Kaleth Ibarra Castro, 20, was taken into ICE custody after a traffic stop in China Grove. A federal judge granted Hebert bond more than two weeks later after U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, among others, campaigned for his release.
Now, the focus is on Colina Torres, who was detained at about 6 a.m. Monday near Culebra Road and North Navidad Street, in the Woodlawn Lake area, his sister said. He was returning home after driving his brother-in-law to work…
