Highway 1 Horror Near Sea Ranch Leaves One Dead, Coastal Lifeline Shut

A lonely stretch of Highway 1 near Sea Ranch turned deadly yesterday when a truck and a sedan collided, killing one person and leaving another with severe injuries. The crash shut down the iconic coastal highway in both directions between Sea Ranch and Stewarts Point, stranding drivers on one of the most isolated pieces of pavement in Sonoma County. Several other people were treated at the scene, and some were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

California Highway Patrol officers were called to the wreck at 4:53 PM, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Agency logs show one person was pronounced dead by about 5:30 PM. The collision shut down Highway 1 in both directions near Yardarm Drive while firefighters, medics, and CHP officers worked the scene and tried to reach those stuck on either side.

CHP Officer Andrew Barclay described the crash location as “pretty far out there,” a grim understatement for anyone who has lost cell service on that stretch. He said he was not aware of any arrests as of Friday evening, and the road remained closed as emergency workers and investigators stayed on scene, authorities told the San Francisco Chronicle. Crews worked into the night to clear the wreckage and establish a safe timeline for reopening the highway.

According to Caltrans, the state has directed recent funding to mitigation projects on State Route 1 near Stewarts Point and Sea Ranch, aimed at shoring up this vulnerable stretch of road. Travelers are urged to check Caltrans QuickMap for real-time closure and detour information before heading out…
