The Argent Boulevard-U.S. 278 intersection is getting its traffic light sooner than expected.
The S.C. The Department of Transportation announced the intersection’s traffic lights will be activated by the end of September. SCDOT has made a series of improvements to the traffic-heavy intersection over the past year, including installation of the lights. The lights have not been activated since being installed, however.
Why the lights are needed
Argent Boulevard is a corridor in Hardeeville connecting U.S. 278 to S.C. 170, both high-traffic highways. Its location makes it a short-cut between the two highways. Eastbound drivers on U.S. 278 can take Argent to S.C. 170 instead of using the often busy U.S. 278-S.C. 170 intersection.
The area around Argent is growing rapidly, with new neighborhoods, retirement communities and businesses popping up. Both local and through traffic have increased as a result, and a 2023 traffic study found upwards of 14,800 vehicles use Argent Boulevard daily…
