PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — For a time, Bryan and his 16-year-old sister moved back and forth through the hospital. They visited their mother in one unit and their father in another.
Their father was recovering from serious injuries after a car accident. While visiting him, their mother, Shavanna, suffered a medical emergency. Doctors intubated her, placed her on a ventilator and treated her in the intensive care unit.
“Honestly, I mostly remember being on autopilot,” Bryan told The BayNet. “There wasn’t really time for me to process what was happening because I knew my sister needed me, and I felt like I had to stay composed and figure things out for both of us.”
