Jodi’s Journal: One grant, two very different community winners

Don’t miss the significance of this one: A $15 million grant to the city of Sioux Falls is going to go a long way toward moving a “someday” sort of vision at Falls Park to a transformative project starting much sooner than I would have anticipated.

The announcement of funding last week came from the Bezos Earth Fund, a nonprofit led by Jeff Bezos, founder and executive chairman of Amazon, and vice chair Lauren Sánchez Bezos, his wife.

It will accelerate part of the Sioux Falls master plan for Falls Park — a vision to redevelop and enhance the city-owned quarry property east of the park across Weber Avenue. The former industrial site has sat untouched for decades and has the potential to attract a huge range of visitors and locals, depending on our community chooses to program it.

At the same time, I was curious to learn more about the other seven communities included in the $100 million of grants — particularly because my hometown of Cleveland is among them…
