Gonzaga University’s response to the racially motivated incident in February has served as a reminder to students that the university continues to neglect their guiding mission statement.
The mission statement emphasizes the dignity of the human person, social justice, diversity and intercultural competence. This statement was what originally drew me to GU. I did not expect it from a Catholic university in eastern Washington.
Unfortunately, my hopes were too high. These promises are just words on a page, not something the university actually strives for. This became abundantly clear watching the university’s reaction to the bigotry and hostile environment it created for many students over the past semester…
