Storm Chances Return After Near Record Heat

Saturday got off to a soggy start during the early morning hours, but the clouds quickly moved out, and temperatures warmed into the upper 80s. I think that’s a good benchmark for what we can expect on Sunday.

Temperatures to start the new week will climb into the middle to upper 80s for most locations under sunny skies and windy conditions. Winds will be very gusty, with some breezes reaching between 30 and 35 mph.

The magic number to watch is 88°. That’s the record high set in Springfield back in 2001. It’ll be close, but we do have a chance to at least tie the record.

Severe weather and thunderstorms will try to march back into the Ozarks on Monday. Right now, the Storm Prediction Center has highlighted much of the area under a Slight Risk (Level 2 out of 5) for severe weather. Some thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon hours, capable of producing damaging winds and large hail.

The more widespread severe weather threat is expected to arrive overnight Monday as a cold front approaches the region. That will cause Tuesday to get off to a stormy start, with all modes of severe weather possible.

Temperatures will also crash on Tuesday. Rather than highs in the 80s, many locations will only climb into the upper 60s and lower 70s…
