A 68-year-old man in Maryland has been indicted on dozens of charges after police say he carried out a violent carjacking and shooting spree across multiple areas in Prince George’s County, which only ended when he tried to steal a manual car but could not operate it.
What Happened During the Incident
According to court records, the incident took place on May 15 and involved a series of attacks across Greenbelt, College Park, and Riverdale. Authorities say the accused, identified as 68-year-old Larry James Simpson, randomly targeted multiple victims during the afternoon hours.
Police allege that Simpson began the spree around 2:30 p.m. and continued moving through different neighbourhoods while armed and stealing vehicles.
How the Violence Unfolded
Investigators say the situation escalated quickly and followed a disturbing pattern of shootings and carjackings.
Authorities allege:
- Simpson first shot at a 64-year-old man in College Park
- He later crashed a stolen vehicle and opened fire again after getting out
- He used an assault-style rifle during parts of the incident
- He stole multiple vehicles while trying to escape
An off-duty police officer reportedly witnessed one of the carjackings and began following him, which led to a chase where shots were allegedly fired at the officer as well.
