Longtime Washington radio host Mike O’Meara, who jumped into podcasting with “The Mike O’Meara Show” in 2009, has announced his retirement after 46 years behind the microphone. On the podcast’s latest episode, which is No. 3,596, O’Meara says he will retire in January after he hosts one final listener cruise that he is dubbing the “Final Voyage.”
“The last few years have, in our medium, just like in a lot of broadcasting, radio and digital, been extremely tough,” O’Meara told listeners. But he says the support of the show’s audience kept it going. “It has been a joy to do this show,” he says.
O’Meara — who started in radio in 1980 — says he came to the decision after realizing just how long he had been doing it. “I realized that I had had my name on a show, in one form or the other, in one medium or the other, for 46 years,” he says. “It’s time.”…
