COLLEGE PARK, MD — A powerful nor’easter is pushing through the northeastern United States, bringing flooding, strong winds, and widespread power outages. By Saturday afternoon, more than 88,000 homes and businesses were without electricity, down from a peak of 119,000 earlier in the day.
The storm also forced the cancellation of more than 400 flights and left transportation plans in disarray across the region. Officials warned that the worst impacts could continue for days as the system keeps sending high winds, high tides, and heavy rain toward coastal areas.
Weather service warns the storm may linger for days
Bob Oravec, the lead forecaster with the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland, said the system is likely to remain active through the next few days. He said the region could see a combination of strong winds, dangerous tides, and additional heavy rain.
Oravec said nor’easters are not unusual as New England moves into autumn, but this one may have arrived earlier than average for a major storm.
