Volunteer Dedicated To Working With At-Risk Youth Randomly Gunned Down on Way Home From Church in DC

Ryan Realbuto, 23, of Pittsford, N.Y., was a volunteer for a religious group in Washington, D.C.

Police in Washington, D.C ., are hunting for suspects who killed a religious volunteer from upstate New York who was volunteering in the nation’s capital.

Ryan Realbuto, 23, of Pittsford, New York, was gunned down just after 10 p.m . last Thursday, the Metropolitan Police Department said.

Realbuto was headed home from an event at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church when he apparently was targeted in a violent robbery .

He was found on the street in the Northeast section of the city and died at a hospital.

“We were so balanced before, the five of us. There’s a missing link, there’s a missing piece,” his mother, Janet Realbuto, told WROC-TV .

Realbuto was a volunteer with the service program Cap Corps in Washington, D.C., for the past six months, working with students from a high school.

The group is a Franciscan non-profit organization.

He was assigned to Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School’s ninth-grade students at its Leadership Academy to help prepare them to enter the workforce.
