A Fourth of July afternoon on the water turned into chaos in Maryland when a boat suddenly exploded, sending nine people to the hospital and forcing four victims to be airlifted to regional burn centers.
The explosion happened just after 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, at Schaefer’s Canal House in Chesapeake City, where emergency crews rushed to the waterfront after multiple 911 callers reported that an approximately 32-foot-long boat had exploded while tied up at the dock.
According to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal, seven of the injured were aboard the vessel, while two others were standing on a nearby dock when the blast was reported.
