Brunswick County urges water conservation ahead of Fourth of July as drought worsens

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Brunswick County is urging residents to conserve water as drought conditions worsen ahead of the Independence Day weekend.

To cut peak demand, the county asks residents to limit irrigation — the largest source of nonessential water use — and run systems only from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. on assigned days:

  • Mondays
  • No irrigation
  • Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday
  • Odd addresses
  • Wednesday/Friday/Sunday
  • even addresses

The voluntary guidelines apply to Brunswick County Public Utilities customers and to Bald Head Island, Holden Beach, Oak Island and Ocean Isle Beach utilities, which receive county water.

Officials said demand has topped 80% of production and distribution capacity and conditions will be monitored for possible Stage 2 mandatory restrictions…
