Leland voting district debate stalls after divided council votes

LELAND, N.C. (WECT) – After months of discussion, the Town of Leland’s debate over creating voting districts is on hold following the latest council meeting.

At last week’s meeting, Councilman Frank Pendleton, an outspoken critic of voting districts, made a motion to pause conversations until the census is complete in 2030. To which he did not receive a second.

A month earlier, Councilwoman Veronica Carter made a motion to vote for a mock-up of voting district maps, but the board voted against that motion as well. The council remains divided, with a majority voting against the districts…
