NORTHBOROUGH – In the early 1600s, Thomas Brigham acquired farmland in Central Massachusetts, passing it to his son, Thomas Brigham II, in 1665. By 1735, Jesse Brigham built a large farmhouse on the land, which had been turned into a dairy operation.
In 1928, the then-300-year-old farm was bought by Homer C. Darling, who wished to create a golf course. On Memorial Day in 1931, Juniper Hill Golf Club opened, featuring nine holes designed by Darling. Fresh milk and eggs were sold to customers. In 1954, the second half of what became the Riverside Course was constructed, taking a winding course along the Assabet River.
But Juniper Hill wasn’t done yet. In the late 1960s, the club, led by second-generation manager Homer D. Darling, purchased adjacent land to create another 18 holes. The Lakeside Course officially opened on Memorial Day in 1991, with the back nine holes opened for play in August…
