TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Local health officials are reporting a rise in cyclosporiasis cases across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan with Lucas County recording approximately 65 cases and southeast Michigan reporting 170 total, including 90 in Monroe County and 33 in Lenawee County.
“Every day it changes a little bit more as cases start to come in,” said Teresa DeTano, an epidemiologist with the Lucas County Health Department.
What is cyclosporiasis?
Cyclosporiasis is an infection that affects the gastric system. It spreads when a person eats or drinks something that is contaminated.
“Symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, sometimes fever, sometimes chills and sometimes bloody diarrhea,” DeTano said.
