Families filled Hale Arena as the Kansas City Invitational Black Rodeo returned for its second year, with parents carrying toddlers in cowboy boots, children proudly wearing brand-new cowboy hats and relatives stopping to take photos dressed in full Western attire.
The second annual event, presented by the Southeastern Rodeo Association, expanded from two performances to three after demand exceeded expectations during its inaugural year in Kansas City. Last year’s tickets sold out weeks before the event, leaving many families unable to attend. This year, organizers added another performance, giving more people the opportunity to experience a tradition that had been absent from the city for years.
For Tamara Alvarado, attending this year’s rodeo was an opportunity she had been waiting for after missing last year’s sold-out event. She brought her 2-year-old daughter, Sophia, hoping to introduce her to a part of Black history and culture that she believes deserves greater visibility…
