HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The Hinds County Board of Supervisors approved an assistant district attorney position that will be dedicated to addressing the county’s jail case backlog, improving the timely administration of justice and helping reduce overcrowding while protecting public safety.
“The Board’s action gives our office an important additional resource to move appropriate cases through the justice system more efficiently,” said Hinds County District Attorney Brad McCullouch. “I sincerely thank President Robert Graham and the members of the Board of Supervisors for recognizing the urgency of this issue and investing a solution that serves victims, defendants, law enforcement and taxpayers.”
Hinds County District Attorney requests help to reduce jail overcrowding
According to McCullouch, the additional prosecutor will focus on the timely review and disposition of non-violent offenders and those high-risk medical detainees. This position will help identify cases appropriate for resolution, reduce avoidable delays and allow the District Attorney’s Office to continue prioritizing the prosecution of violent crime and repeat offenders.
“This decision demonstrates what can be accomplished when county leaders come together around a shared responsibility,” stated McCullouch. “Our office looks forward to building on this partnership with the Board as we work to strengthen public safety, reduce the jail backlog and improve the administration of justice through Hinds County.”
