COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — It was a throwback day at the Albany International Airport. Two airplanes donning retro livery departed from the facility on Tuesday.

A Southwest Airlines flight with “Desert Gold” livery took off from the airport just before 6 a.m. The Boeing 737 Max 8 was unveiled in 2022 and is painted with the airline’s original golden color scheme.
According to the Southwest website, the aircraft’s tail number, N871HK, is also special. “871” reportedly references the day that Southwest’s first commercial flight took to the skies — June 18, 1971 — and “HK” pays tribute to Southwest Airlines co-founder Herb Kelleher, who died in 2019.
Minutes after Southwest’s departure, a United plane wearing “Friend Ship” livery also took off from the airport. The Airbus A320 boasted a red, white and blue design that ran for a short period in the early 1970s, according to the airport.
