COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A Schenectady man was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly stole from unlocked cars in a Colonie neighborhood. Police are warning residents to be on alert for overnight thefts.

The Colonie Police Department said officers were dispatched to Lincoln Avenue just after midnight after a resident saw someone trying to open car doors in the neighborhood. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Asa Slauson, reportedly tried to evade police but was ultimately captured.
The 35-year-old was found with several credit cards and car keys that he had taken from unlocked cars in the area, according to police. He was reportedly charged with petit larceny and four counts of grand larceny before being released on an appearance ticket.
“Our officers have been out in the neighborhoods all week alerting residents to these overnight thefts,” said Colonie Police Chief James Gerace. “This arrest shows what happens when that effort comes full circle, a sharp-eyed resident saw something, called immediately, and gave our patrol units the exact window they needed to make a swift arrest.”

Colonie authorities said they have seen a recent uptick in thefts from unlocked vehicles during the overnight hours. The following neighbors have reportedly been targets:
- Hackett Avenue
- Everett Road / North Street (West Albany)
- Lincoln Avenue / Lanci Lane (Village of Colonie)
- Covinton Avenue / Nutwood Avenue
