EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. (WTEN) — With almost every seat in the house taken, roughly 45 Rensselaer County residents packed the Legislative Chambers in East Greenbush to make their voices heard. Specifically, speaking out against county officials deciding to defy an order from the state.

Currently, the 287(g) memorandums deputize some local officers to act as federal immigration agents.
Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin announced in a Facebook video that his administration would defy Gov. Kathy Hochul’s mandated stoppage of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations for local law enforcement statewide.
“This letter will not be complied with,” he said. “We will continue to participate in the 287(g) program here in Rensselaer County. I will defy you.”…
