Over the last 24 hours parts of New Mexico have picked up on a healthy amount of rainfall. Parts of the Albuquerque Metro picked anywhere from 0.25 – 0.75″ worth of rain, while the highest accumulation was ranged from 1.70-2.00″ along I-25 around Truth or Consequences. Late this morning, light showers were indicated on radar moving through Mora, Colfax and Taos counties. Today, additional monsoon showers and storms are expected to develop in the afternoon and evening. A few strong storms are possible near southwest Colorado and northwest New Mexico, but locally heavy rainfall cannot be ruled out of the forecast. The National Weather Service (NWS) has Flood Watches in place for a large part of New Mexico until 3 AM Friday. These locations include sections of Sierra and Socorro Counties, southwest New Mexico, Sacramento Mountains, the Albuquerque Metro, southwest Colorado and northwest New Mexico. The ground is already saturated from repeated rounds of rainfall earlier this week, which will make some areas more susceptible to the possibility of flash flooding.
Showers and storms may also impact the metro this evening before more rainfall arrives overnight. A plume of monsoon moisture will be sticking around on Friday contributing to scattered showers and storms around the state. Locally heavy rainfall will also be part of Friday’s forecast. Moisture will start to dwindle as the weekend arrives early next week. Drier air will temporarily become the dominant feature for much of New Mexico on Sunday and Monday. Rain and storm chances on Saturday will be isolated before becoming spotty the following two days.
