CANYON, TX — Multiple wildfires were burning across the Texas Panhandle, eastern New Mexico and the Oklahoma Panhandle late Thursday, with some evacuations lifted and others still in place. Officials reported several fires, closed roads and poor air quality as crews worked to slow the spread.
In Randall County, the Hunggate Fire had burned an estimated 14,000 acres and was 30% contained. The City of Canyon said all mandatory evacuations had been lifted by 11:30 p.m.

Fire officials said the Hunggate Fire had stopped advancing, and a storm chaser captured video of a home burning near 8th Street and W CR 283 southwest of Canyon. Other fires were reported near FM 3331 and South Georgia Street, southwest of Canyon on Arnot Road, and near the Randall, Castro and Deaf Smith county lines.
Angelo Sports said the Rambelles’ South Central regional game against Texas A&M-Kingsville was canceled because of reduced air quality from the brush fires and moved to noon Friday.
Blazes spread through surrounding counties
In Potter County, the Shifty fire near the Crawford Ranch west of U.S. 287/87 northwest of Amarillo had burned 3,000 acres and was 20% contained. The McBride Fire in Carson County was listed as 100% contained after burning 2,192 acres…
