Family moved to Kentucky for daughter’s treatment. Toxic mold changed everything

WALTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — A Texas family who moved to northern Kentucky for their child’s serious medical needs is now facing another major challenge after toxic mold forced them from their home and back to Austin.

Sam and Jana Gilkey moved from the Lone Star State to Walton, Kentucky, in 2024 so their daughter, Riley, could receive specialized treatment at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Riley, who recently celebrated her sixth birthday, was born with a rare genetic condition known as DiGeorge Syndrome and also battles Crohn’s disease.

The move brought the family closer to the care Riley needed, but what they hoped would be a fresh start quickly turned into another hardship.
